We refer to something that prevents our natural healing in homeopathy as a maintaining cause. Almost every intervention with a Topical Steroid will result with a response of some kind. In TWS repetitive application is suppressing the body’s natural symptoms creating an exaggerated response, this is a maintaining cause.
Because homeopathic remedies are energetic, they work deep level within and with the body’s own natural responses. Homeopathy is not concerned with what is on the surface, this is our bodies cleaver alert system to us that something is happening within. By looking at the totality of the symptoms of the person, We address them holistically. And when we take everything together and find a remedy that closely matches the symptoms, we are shown we can help out bodies to move through the healing process that they have been trying so hard to do.
Topical = Relating or applied directly to a part of the body (creams, ointments, lotions, oils and gels)
Steroid = Natural hormones or Lab made like the hormone cortisol, which your adrenal glands make. Cortisol keeps your immune system from making substances that cause inflammation. Corticosteroid drugs are medicines designed to replicate this. Slowing or stopping the immune system processes that trigger inflammation.
Withdrawal = suddenly stop or cut back the use of. When used in reference to any type of drug application refers to the physical and mental symptoms experienced upon ceasing its use.
TSW, is known as many differencing terms, Some more frequently used terms are;
Red Skin Syndrome, descriptive of the occurring symptoms. TSA (Topical Steroid Addiction) drug resistance requires more to be applied to achieve the same effect.
Topical Steroid withdrawal refers to the physical and mental symptoms experienced by someone when they stop applying a steroid application.
TSW OR Eczema?
On first inspection TSW is often mistaken for a case of eczema becoming more severe with accompanying allergic reaction.
The picture that is emerging however is the effect of response to the original steroid suppression on the person. The steroid does not clear, it drives the original picture deeper and creates a set of symptoms. Which escalate spreading to other areas as our body alerts us to the problem. Many non-skin related symptoms can also occur not solely a skin condition.
It can be incredibly debilitating both physically and mentally for those who are suffering and can in severe cases see people housebound for months or worse years.
Many describe their skin as appearing as if its badly sunburnt or having sleeves. Arms and legs may radiate in redness, described as Red flashing. Itching, redness, swelling, rashes that not only spread can will continue to develop in new areas.
When in withdrawal we may see cyclical symptoms as the body attempts to heal but the body’s immune response is in overdrive. Swelling, oozing effected areas. Increased feeling of burning and then dry sore and flake. Never resolving.
The body fights hard with the systemic inflammation that is happening. It tries to regulate its temperature; you may feel too hot and or too cold. As it cycles through the body’s healing meridians our sleep can be disturbed, suffering with insomnia and fatigue.
There is likely an increase in allergy responses and skin sensitivity which results in becoming hypersensitized to almost everything. Temperature, Textiles, bathing, water, creams or ointments. Severity can result with nerve pain being felt.
Emotionally it is no surprise those suffering with TSW may have depression, fear or anxiety
It is hugely important that you don’t just stop using topical steroids. Working with your practitioner and professionals you should discuss a slow and steady weaning process. Adrenal crisis is severe cases can be life threatening. Therefore, please do be cautious.
